My position paper subject is on lab-grown meat. This is a new and emerging way of producing meat. Beef is eaten in abundance, Europe currently eats approximately 11kg per person and the US eats approximately 25kg per person a year(2). This may sound small but that value is huge when you multiply it by the total population(1). Europe eats ~8.13 Billion kg and the US eats ~9.04 billion kg. The production of beef is clearly breaching ethical, environmentally-friendly and safe levels. Cows, like many animals, are usually fed with soybean meat. Soybean production is an agriculturally damaging process, that is currently "overtaking huge areas in fragile ecosystems such as the:
Climate change is another key factor here, where livestock production accounts for 37% methane and 65% nitrous oxide. Though the transport sector contribute much greater in carbon dioxide, methane is 23 times and nitrous oxide is 296 times more effective at raising the global average temperature (4). 1. http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/europe-population/
